Daniel Messier

Daniel Messier

Daniel views math as a way of appreciating the world. He gained that perspective at Skyline College while earning an A.S. in Electrical Engineering and took it to SJSU to earn a B.S. in Applied Math. Along the way he frequented Maker Spaces, physics courses, and peer tutoring centers. In those tutoring centers he gained years of experience helping students newer than him but on the same path. A strong believer in the Feynman Technique (in essence ‘you don’t understand something if you cannot explain it’), he appreciates AoPS’s focus on student expression in the learning process over a lecture centric approach. He values the perspectives of students which he believes is vital for a community, like AoPS, dedicated to making quantitative reasoning as familiar as qualitative description. Accordingly, he aims to connect each student’s ordinary experience with the underlying principles of the course. Not just a tool for future achievement, he hopes to show that math is also a way of viewing the amazing world around us.

Tanner graduated from University of California Santa Barbara with a degree in mathematics in 2022. He then worked as a remote tutor and prompt engineer while teaching English in Sakartvelo and Argentina. He was drawn to AoPS because he has a passion for mathematics and teaching. Our family regularly talks about AoPS. We try to think about how our life would be different without you all. What if my daughter hadn't learned to love math? What if she never experienced being pushed to her limits? Overcoming failure? She wouldn't be who she is. And she is AWESOME! A very proud mom here. We are so fortunate that we found AoPS Academy. I credit AoPS for much of her confidence.
